Shaktoolik Airport (IATA: SKK, ICAO: PFSH) is a state-owned, public-use airport that serves as a critical transportation link for the remote Iñupiat village of Shaktoolik, Alaska. Located in the Nome Census Area, the airport provides the community with year-round access to essential services, mail, cargo, and passenger travel, as no roads connect Shaktoolik to the rest of the state. It is an indispensable lifeline, supporting both daily life and vital economic and cultural activities.

The airport was officially activated in April 1971, constructed to serve the community after it relocated from a nearby site in the 1960s due to severe coastal erosion. Its significance is highlighted during the annual Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, for which Shaktoolik is an official checkpoint. During the race, the airport becomes a hub of activity, facilitating the transport of supplies, veterinarians, race officials, and media, underscoring its importance to both local and statewide events.

Shaktoolik Airport is situated one nautical mile (approximately 1.2 miles or 2 km) northwest of the village’s central area. Given the community's small size, access between the village and the airport is typically on foot or by using personal vehicles such as all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) in the summer and snowmachines in the winter. There are no taxis or public shuttle services available, so visitors should coordinate transportation with their local contacts or hosts prior to arrival.

Operations at Shaktoolik are entirely domestic, consisting of scheduled and charter flights that connect the village to regional hubs, primarily Nome (OME) and Unalakleet (UNK). Major local airlines, including Bering Air and Ryan Air Service, provide regular passenger and cargo flights using small, durable aircraft suited for the region's conditions. The airport handles a modest volume of traffic, with annual passenger boardings typically numbering between 1,500 and 2,000.

Facilities at the airport are basic and functional, designed to meet the essential needs of rural travel. A small, heated terminal building provides a waiting area for passengers and a counter for airline check-ins. There are no restaurants, shops, or rental car services on-site. The airport features a single gravel runway (14/32) measuring 4,004 feet in length, capable of accommodating the turboprop aircraft common throughout rural Alaska.

Travelers flying to Shaktoolik should arrive at least 60 minutes before their scheduled departure but should confirm specific times with their airline. Due to the unpredictable nature of Alaskan weather, flight delays and cancellations can occur, so it is wise to build extra time into connecting travel itineraries. Services in the village are extremely limited; visitors should pack all necessary medications, specialized supplies, and personal items.
