The airport was closed in the early 2000s. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the runway was largely intact in 2002, but by 2004-2005, significant urban development, including new roads and buildings, had begun on the southern end of the airfield. This indicates a definitive closure and start of redevelopment around 2003.
The primary reason for the closure was urban encroachment and land redevelopment. As the city of Barranca expanded, the land occupied by the airport became highly valuable for residential and commercial use. The city grew around and eventually over the airfield, making continued aviation operations unsafe and impractical. The land was subsequently re-zoned and sold for urban development.
The airport site has been partially integrated into the urban fabric of Barranca. The southern half of the former runway has been completely replaced by city streets (including one named 'Av. El Aeropuerto'), houses, and commercial properties. The northern half of the asphalt runway is still visible on satellite maps but is in a severe state of disrepair, bisected by dirt tracks, and surrounded by new construction. There are no remaining airport infrastructure elements like a terminal, tower, or hangars. The land is effectively a mix of developed and undeveloped urban space.
Barranca Airport was a small regional airfield, or 'aerĂłdromo', rather than a major commercial airport. Its primary role was to support general aviation, including private aircraft, air taxi services, and agricultural aviation (such as crop dusting for the region's extensive sugar cane fields). It provided a vital transportation link for the province before the Pan-American Highway and other road networks were fully modernized. It did not handle scheduled flights from major national airlines.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Barranca Airport at its original location. Reopening is considered impossible due to the permanent and extensive urban development that has been built directly on the former runway and airport grounds. Any future airport to serve the Barranca region would require the acquisition of new land at a different location, well outside the current city limits.
I'm peruvian and I haven't seen an airport in this city, ever !!! Not even in Flight Simulator.
