Canton Island Airport (IATA: CIS, ICAO: PCIS) serves Abariringa, KI.
Canton Island Airport (IATA: CIS, ICAO: PCIS) is located on Canton Island, a sparsely populated island in the Phoenix Islands of the Republic of Kiribati, specifically in the municipality of Abariringa.
Type of facility and operations: It is a public airport with a single asphalt runway measuring 6,230 feet (1,900 m) in length,. The runway is unlighted. While it primarily serves general aviation, charter, and corporate flight departments, it does not have scheduled airline traffic. The airport's flight information region (FIR) is Oakland Oceanic West.
Notable features or history: The airfield was constructed between 1938 and 1939 by Pan American Airways as a stopover on their route from Hawaii to New Zealand, with scheduled service beginning on July 14, 1940. During World War II, it was used by the 40th Ferrying Squadron for moving combat aircraft and served as an alternate air ferry route. The airfield was shelled by a Japanese submarine in November 1943.
After the war, it continued to be a major trans-Pacific stopover for airlines like Pan American World Airways, British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines, Qantas, and Canadian Pacific Airlines, accommodating aircraft such as DC-4s, DC-6Bs, DC-7Cs, and Boeing 377 Stratocruisers. However, with the advent of long-range jet aircraft in the 1960s, its commercial importance declined, and the final commercial service landed in November 1965. The airport was officially closed in January 1968. It saw occasional use for U.S. government projects, including the human spaceflight program (Project Mercury and Project Gemini), before its final closure in 1976. Air Tungaru used it as an occasional refueling stop into the 1990s.
Current status: Today, Canton Island Airport is available for emergency use only,. It has no scheduled commercial airline service,.
