The exact closure date is not officially documented. However, analysis of historical satellite imagery indicates a gradual decline. The airstrip appeared functional in the early 2000s but shows significant overgrowth and disuse by the early 2010s. It is estimated to have ceased operations sometime in the late 2000s.
The closure was primarily due to economic and logistical factors. Maintaining even a basic airstrip in such a remote location is costly. The increasing availability and efficiency of maritime transport (water taxis or 'lanchas') for travel between the islands and the mainland made the airstrip largely obsolete. Many small airstrips in the Guna Yala region were abandoned for similar reasons as boat travel became the more economically viable and practical option for local communities.
As of the 2020s, the site of the former airport is completely unusable for aviation. Satellite imagery shows the runway area is entirely overgrown with grass, shrubs, and other vegetation. The faint outline of the former strip is still visible, but it is now bisected by footpaths and has been partially reclaimed by the local village for general use and open space. There are no remaining airport facilities or infrastructure.
Tupile Airport was a small, unpaved bush airstrip that served the indigenous Guna community on Isla Tupile and the surrounding San Blas Islands. Its significance was purely local, acting as a vital link to mainland Panama during the mid-to-late 20th century. It facilitated essential services such as medical evacuations, the transport of critical supplies, and access for missionaries and a small number of tourists. Operations were limited to small, single-engine STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) aircraft, such as Cessna 206s, operating under Visual Flight Rules (VFR). It was never a commercial airport with scheduled flights but relied on charter and private air services.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Tupile Airport. The transportation needs of the community are met by maritime services. The cost to clear, restore, and certify the airstrip to modern safety standards would be prohibitive and is not considered a priority for regional development. The focus of transportation infrastructure in the Guna Yala region remains on improving its key regional airports and maritime routes.
