Ashburton Airport (IATA: ASG, ICAO: NZAS) serves Ashburton, NZ.
Ashburton Airport (NZAS (ASG)) is a small public aerodrome located approximately 3.7 kilometers (2.3 miles) east of Ashburton township on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island. Owned by the Ashburton District Council, it operates primarily as a civil airfield supporting VFR (Visual Flight Rules) traffic without scheduled commercial services.
The airport features four unsealed (grass) runways: 02/20 (897m), 06/24 (1,388m), 11/29 (1,024m), and 16/34 (1,080m), with runway 16/34 being lighted for night flying. Its known uses include recreational flying, pilot training, and serving as the home of the Ashburton Aviation Museum. Historically, it was significant as a Royal New Zealand Air Force Elementary Flying Training School during World War II, training over 1,100 pilots, and was the first aerodrome in the South Island to be owned by a local authority. The airfield still retains a section of its WWII tarmac and a compass rose.
