Longana Airport (IATA: LOD, ICAO: NVSG) is a vital air link for the island of Ambae in the Penama Province of Vanuatu. Functioning as the primary gateway to the eastern side of the island, the airport plays a crucial role in connecting local communities to the nation's main centers for commerce, healthcare, and essential supplies. While it serves a small number of tourists, its principal importance lies in providing reliable transport for residents and facilitating critical services, a role that became especially prominent in recent years.

The airport's modern history is intrinsically linked to the volcanic activity of Manaro Voui. During the volcano's recurrent eruptions between 2017 and 2018, which led to the temporary evacuation of the entire island, Longana Airport was a critical hub for humanitarian and logistical operations. Recognizing the need for a more resilient facility, the airport underwent a significant upgrade as part of the Vanuatu Aviation Investment Project. Completed around 2020, this work transformed the former grass airstrip into an all-weather airport with a paved runway, enhancing its safety and operational reliability year-round.

Located on the eastern coast of Ambae, Longana Airport is situated in a rural setting. Access to and from the airport is typically via pre-arranged transport, as there are no formal taxi ranks or public bus services available upon arrival. Travelers usually coordinate with their accommodation providers for transfers, which are often conducted using 4x4 trucks, the most common form of transport on the island. The airport exclusively handles domestic flights, with Air Vanuatu being the sole scheduled operator. It provides essential connections to Port Vila (VLI) and Luganville (SON), though the flight frequency can be limited.

Reflecting its function as a regional airstrip, the facilities at Longana Airport are basic. The terminal consists of a small, simple structure with a check-in counter, a modest sheltered waiting area, and restroom facilities. There are no retail shops, restaurants, or passenger lounges on-site. Travelers are advised to bring their own snacks, water, and any other necessities. It is recommended to arrive at least 60 minutes prior to departure for check-in. Given that flight schedules in Vanuatu can be subject to change due to weather or operational factors, visitors should build flexibility into their travel itineraries, particularly when connecting to international flights from Port Vila.
