Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Routine helicopter operations ceased in 1998 when production from the platform was shut down. The physical helideck was permanently and completely removed along with the entire platform topside structure in 2013.

Reason for Closure

Economic reasons. The helideck was an integral part of the Albuskjell A platform. Its closure was a direct consequence of the cessation of oil and gas production from the Albuskjell field, which was no longer economically viable. This led to the full decommissioning and removal of the platform as required by Norwegian regulations.

Current Status

The site is open sea. The entire Albuskjell A platform, including the topside, living quarters, drilling rig, and the helideck, was completely decommissioned and removed. The topside structure was lifted and transported for recycling in 2013. The seabed at the location has been cleared of all installation-related debris.

Historical Significance

NO-0122 was not a public airport but the ICAO location indicator for the helideck on the Albuskjell 1/6-A platform, an offshore oil and gas installation operated by ConocoPhillips in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. Its sole purpose was to support the platform's operations. It handled regular helicopter flights for crew changes, transportation of specialized personnel, and medical evacuations, connecting the remote platform to onshore bases, primarily Stavanger Airport, Sola (ENGM). The helideck was a critical piece of infrastructure for the development and operation of the Albuskjell field, which was a significant part of the Greater Ekofisk Area, a cornerstone of Norway's oil industry.

Reopening Prospects

None. The physical infrastructure of the platform and its helideck no longer exists. The oil and gas reservoir it was built to service has been permanently plugged and abandoned. There are no plans to rebuild any structure at this location.
