Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Operations ceased on October 26, 2004, coinciding with the shutdown of the entire Frigg gas field. The platform and its helideck were subsequently physically removed between 2005 and 2010.

Reason for Closure

The closure was for economic reasons, specifically the depletion of the Frigg gas field's reserves. After 27 years of production, the field was no longer commercially viable, which led to a massive decommissioning project to remove all platforms, including the DP2 platform.

Current Status

The site is now open seabed. The Frigg DP2 platform, along with its helideck, has been completely dismantled and removed from its location as part of the Frigg Cessation Project, one of the largest offshore decommissioning projects of its time. The wells have been plugged and abandoned, and the site has been cleared to meet environmental and safety standards, returning the area to its natural marine state. No physical structure exists at the specified coordinates.

Historical Significance

The Frigg DP2 (Drilling Platform 2) was a steel jacket platform and a key component of the giant Frigg gas field, which straddled the UK-Norway median line in the North Sea. The helideck, identified by ICAO code NO-0121, was the essential lifeline for the platform. It handled all personnel transport, including crew changes, VIP visits, and medical evacuations. Helicopter flights, typically using models like the Sikorsky S-61N and Aérospatiale Super Puma, connected the platform primarily with Stavanger Airport, Sola (ENGM) in Norway. The helideck's constant operation was critical for the safe and continuous manning of the drilling and production facilities, contributing to the Frigg field's role as a major supplier of natural gas to the United Kingdom for over a quarter of a century.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero prospects for reopening. The gas reservoir is depleted, and the entire physical infrastructure, including the platform and helideck, has been permanently removed. The concept of reopening is not applicable as the facility no longer exists.
