Approximately mid-2016. The helideck ceased operations concurrently with the permanent shutdown and decommissioning of the Varg oil field, which occurred in the summer of 2016.
Economic reasons. The 'airport' was a helideck on the Petrojarl Varg FPSO vessel. It was closed because the Varg oil field, which the vessel served, was no longer economically viable. The decline in oil prices and diminishing reserves led the field's operator to cease production, making the FPSO and its supporting infrastructure, including the helideck, redundant.
The site is non-existent. The ICAO code NO-0120 was specific to the helideck on the Petrojarl Varg vessel. After the Varg field ceased production, the vessel was moved from its location in the North Sea. It was laid up for several years and was eventually sold for green recycling (scrapping) in early 2023. Therefore, the physical structure that constituted the 'airport' has been dismantled.
The facility, ICAO NO-0120, was not a traditional airport but a critical offshore helideck located on the Petrojarl Varg, a Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel. Its primary and sole purpose was to support oil and gas extraction at the Varg field in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. From the start of production in 1998 until its closure in 2016, the helideck was the logistical lifeline for the vessel. It handled regular helicopter traffic, primarily from Stavanger Airport, Sola (ENGM), for crew changes, medical evacuations, and the transport of light, urgent cargo. It was essential for the safe and continuous operation of the facility, connecting the dozens of crew members working offshore with the mainland.
There are zero prospects for reopening. The ICAO identifier was tied to a specific installation on a mobile vessel that has now been permanently decommissioned and scrapped. The 'airport' no longer exists and cannot be reopened.
