Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately mid-2019. Production at the Jotun field ceased in December 2016, and the Jotun A FPSO vessel, which housed the helideck, was disconnected and sailed away from the field in June-July 2019.

Reason for Closure

The closure was due to economic and operational reasons. The Jotun oil field reached the end of its planned production life, leading to the cessation of operations. The helideck (NO-0119) was an integral part of the Jotun A FPSO vessel, which was subsequently removed from the location for a major life-extension project and redeployment elsewhere.

Current Status

The original site at coordinates 59.4506, 2.36528 in the Jotun field is now empty ocean. The Jotun A FPSO vessel itself was not scrapped. It was moved to the Rosenberg Worley shipyard in Stavanger, Norway, for extensive upgrades and life-extension work. It has been repurposed for Vår Energi's Balder Future Project and will be redeployed to the Balder field, a different location in the North Sea. The physical helideck still exists on the vessel, but it is no longer at the location associated with ICAO code NO-0119.

Historical Significance

The helideck, identified by the ICAO code NO-0119, was the primary logistical hub for all personnel movement to and from the Jotun A FPSO. From the start of production in 1999, it handled regular helicopter flights, primarily from Stavanger, Norway. These flights were essential for crew changes, transporting specialized technicians, delivering urgent light cargo, and facilitating medical evacuations. It was a critical piece of infrastructure that enabled the safe and continuous operation of the Jotun field, operated by Esso Norge AS (an ExxonMobil subsidiary), for nearly two decades.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero prospects for reopening the helideck at its original Jotun field location. The Jotun field has been decommissioned, and the infrastructure (the FPSO) has been permanently removed from the site. The specific location identifier NO-0119 is permanently closed.
