Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

The platform ceased production in 1998, and the helideck was permanently closed and physically removed along with the platform's topside structure in 2011. The final removal of the supporting jacket was completed around 2013-2014.

Reason for Closure

The closure was due to the decommissioning of the Edda 2/7 C oil platform. This was part of the broader Ekofisk I cessation plan, driven by a combination of factors: the platform reaching the end of its operational design life, significant reservoir subsidence issues across the field, and a major redevelopment project (Ekofisk II) that consolidated operations onto newer, more advanced facilities, making the older platforms redundant.

Current Status

The site is now open sea. The entire Edda platform structure, including the helideck, has been completely removed as part of a comprehensive decommissioning project managed by ConocoPhillips. The seabed has been cleared of all installations and debris, surveyed, and returned to its natural state in accordance with international and Norwegian environmental regulations.

Historical Significance

The Edda Platform's helideck (NO-0116) was not a traditional airport but a critical landing site for helicopters on an offshore oil production platform. It was a vital part of the infrastructure for the Ekofisk field, one of the largest and most significant oil and gas discoveries in the North Sea, which was instrumental in establishing Norway as a major energy exporter. From its installation in the mid-1970s until production ceased in 1998, the helideck handled thousands of helicopter flights, primarily transporting personnel and essential light cargo between the platform and the Norwegian mainland (typically Sola Airport, Stavanger). It was an essential logistical link that enabled the continuous, 24/7 operation of a key asset in Norway's petroleum history.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero plans or prospects for reopening. The physical infrastructure of the platform and its helideck no longer exists.
