The helideck ceased regular operations around 1998 when production stopped. The entire platform, including the helideck, was physically removed in 2013.
Economic reasons. The Cod gas field, which the platform served, became uneconomical to operate due to reservoir depletion. This led to the cessation of production in 1998 and the subsequent decision to decommission and completely remove the platform as part of the Ekofisk I cessation plan.
The site is now open sea. The Cod platform and its associated helideck no longer exist. The structure was lifted and transported ashore for dismantling and recycling in 2013. The well was plugged and permanently abandoned in accordance with offshore regulations.
The Cod Platform was not a public airport but a private offshore helideck (heliport). Its sole function was to support operations for the Cod gas and condensate field, one of the first fields to be developed on the Norwegian continental shelf. The helideck was critical for transporting personnel for crew changes, delivering supplies, and facilitating medical evacuations via helicopter from onshore bases, primarily Sola Airport, Stavanger (ENG: Stavanger Airport, Sola). The platform itself was an unmanned production facility, remotely controlled from the Ekofisk Complex.
None. The physical infrastructure has been completely removed, and the underlying gas field is depleted and permanently abandoned. There are no plans or possibilities for reopening this facility.
