The helideck with ICAO identifier NO-0114, located on the original Valhall Quarters Platform (QP), ceased operations around January 2013. This coincided with the commissioning of the new integrated Production and Hotel (PH) platform. The physical structure of the QP platform, including the helideck, was completely removed from the site in June 2019.
The closure was not due to an accident or typical economic failure, but rather a planned decommissioning as part of the Valhall Redevelopment Project. The original platforms from the early 1980s, including the Quarters Platform, had reached the end of their design life and were suffering from subsidence. They were replaced by a new, modern, integrated platform (Valhall PH) designed to operate for another 40 years. The old helideck was therefore decommissioned and removed along with its host platform.
The site where the Valhall A Quarters Platform and its helideck once stood is now open sea. The entire platform structure was transported to land for dismantling and recycling. Helicopter operations for the Valhall field have not ceased; they are now handled by a new, modern helideck located on the Valhall PH platform (ICAO: ENXH), which is situated nearby within the same field complex.
From its commissioning in 1981 until its closure in 2013, the Valhall QP helideck (NO-0114) was a vital transportation hub for the Valhall oil field, one of the largest on the Norwegian continental shelf. It served as the primary point of arrival and departure for thousands of offshore personnel. It handled thousands of helicopter flights, primarily from Stavanger Airport, Sola (SVG), facilitating crew changes, transporting specialist personnel, and enabling emergency medical evacuations. The helideck was critical to the safe and continuous operation of the field for over 30 years, supporting a significant part of Norway's oil production and economy.
There are zero prospects for reopening the helideck NO-0114. The physical infrastructure it was part of has been completely and permanently removed. The concept of reopening is not applicable, as its function has been fully replaced by the new helideck on the Valhall PH platform.
