Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Helicopter operations ceased following the shutdown of production in September 2014. The physical helideck, as part of the platform's topside, was permanently removed from the site for recycling in 2019.

Reason for Closure

Economic reasons. The Huldra Platform was a facility for extracting natural gas and condensate. It was closed because the field's recoverable reserves were depleted, making continued operation economically unviable. The closure and removal were part of the platform's planned lifecycle from its initial development.

Current Status

The site is now open sea. The entire Huldra platform, including the topside structure containing the helideck and the steel support jacket, has been completely removed. The topside was transported to the Aker Solutions yard in Stord, Norway, in 2019 for dismantling, with over 95% of the materials being recycled. The subsea jacket was removed in 2021, completing the decommissioning process.

Historical Significance

The facility, identified by the national code NO-0112, was not a traditional airport but a helideck on the Huldra offshore gas platform in the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. Its primary function was logistical support, handling helicopter flights for crew changes, medical evacuations, and transportation of essential supplies. It connected the platform with onshore heliports, primarily Bergen Airport, Flesland (ENBR). The Huldra platform was historically significant as the first on the Norwegian continental shelf to be developed with a plan for complete removal and recycling after its operational life, setting a standard for future decommissioning projects in the region.

Reopening Prospects

There are no prospects for reopening. The physical infrastructure has been permanently and intentionally removed, and the gas field it served is depleted. The site has been returned to its natural state as per regulatory requirements for offshore decommissioning.
