1974
The airport was a temporary facility built to serve the community while a permanent, regional airport was constructed. It was closed in 1974 upon the opening of the nearby and superior Mehamn Airport (ENMH), located approximately 20 km (12 miles) to the northeast. The opening of Mehamn Airport, with its paved runway and better facilities, made the temporary Kjøllefjord airfield redundant.
The airport is completely abandoned and decommissioned. The site, located on the Foldneset peninsula, shows the faint, overgrown outline of the former gravel runway when viewed from satellite imagery. There are no remaining airport buildings, hangars, or infrastructure. The land has been largely reclaimed by nature and is not used for any formal purpose.
Kjøllefjord Airport was a temporary STOL (Short Take-off and Landing) airfield that operated from 1970 to 1974. It was a vital part of the pioneering effort to establish a regional air network (short-field network or 'kortbanenettet') in the remote and rugged Finnmark county of Northern Norway. The airport provided essential air connectivity for the isolated fishing village of Kjøllefjord before the permanent national airport infrastructure was fully developed. It featured a short, 420-meter gravel runway. The primary airline operating at the airport was Norving, which used STOL-capable aircraft like the de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter and the Britten-Norman BN-2 Islander to connect Kjøllefjord with other regional hubs.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening Kjøllefjord Airport. Its function was permanently and effectively replaced by Mehamn Airport (ENMH), which continues to serve the region with modern facilities and scheduled flights. The original infrastructure at Kjøllefjord is gone, and there is no economic or logistical need for its revival.
