Approximately 2004. The flying club operating at the airfield was informed in late 2003 that its lease would not be renewed, leading to the cessation of all operations in the following year.
The closure was due to a change in land use policy by the landowner. The Dutch State Property Agency (Rijksvastgoedbedrijf, formerly known as Domeinen), which owned the land, decided not to renew the lease for aviation activities. The land was subsequently sold and reverted to its primary purpose in the region: agriculture.
The site has been fully converted back into agricultural land. Satellite imagery of the coordinates shows that the former grass runway has been ploughed and is now indistinguishable from the surrounding farm fields. The most prominent legacy of the airfield is the name of the road running alongside the former site: 'Pilotenweg' (Pilot's Road), which serves as a permanent reminder of its aviation past. Any original buildings like hangars or a clubhouse have likely been demolished or repurposed for agricultural use.
Established around 1960, the Emmeloord Aerodrome was a vital piece of infrastructure for the newly developed Noordoostpolder. Its primary and most significant role was serving as a base for agricultural aviation. Crop-dusting aircraft operating from this field were crucial for the large-scale farming that defines the region. In addition to its agricultural function, the aerodrome was the home of the 'Vliegclub Noordoostpolder', supporting a community of recreational pilots and facilitating general aviation, gliding (zweefvliegen), and model aircraft flying. It was a characteristic rural grass airstrip, reflecting the practical aviation needs of its time.
There are no known or credible plans to reopen the Noordoostpolder / Emmeloord Aerodrome. The land is now privately owned and actively farmed. The significant hurdles of land acquisition, rezoning from agricultural use, and the high costs of re-establishing aviation infrastructure make any prospect of reopening extremely unlikely.
