Approximately 1998. The final gliding activities ceased as the land was sold to the municipality for redevelopment.
The primary reason for closure was economic and urban development. The site was located directly adjacent to the expanding TT Circuit Assen. The land was acquired by the Municipality of Assen for the development of a commercial and industrial park ('Bedrijvenpark Witterzomer') to support the activities of the race circuit and the local economy, making continued aviation operations impossible.
The site of the former glidersite has been completely redeveloped. It is now occupied by the 'Bedrijvenpark Witterzomer', a business park with commercial buildings, roads, and parking lots. The development is integrated with the infrastructure of the TT Circuit Assen. There are no visible remnants of the original airfield.
Established in the 1930s, Witten Glidersite was a historically important center for recreational gliding in the northern Netherlands. It served as the home base for the Noord-Nederlandsche Zweefvliegclub (North-Netherlands Gliding Club) and was also a key operational site for the Friese Aero Club (FAC) for many decades. The airfield consisted of a simple grass strip and primarily handled glider operations launched by winch. For over 60 years, it was a vital hub for the gliding community in the provinces of Drenthe and Friesland.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening the Witten Glidersite. The land has been permanently repurposed for commercial use, and the original site no longer exists. The gliding clubs that once operated from Witten have long since relocated their operations to other active airfields, such as Drachten Airport (EHDR).
