The airport officially closed on December 31, 2012.
The closure was due to economic and regional development reasons. The land was repurposed for the expansion of the Agriport A7 business park, a large-scale development for greenhouse horticulture and data centers. The municipality of Hollands Kroon rezoned the area, making aviation activities no longer possible.
The site of the former glidersite has been completely redeveloped and is now an integral part of the Agriport A7 business park. The land is occupied by large-scale commercial greenhouses and major data center facilities, including those operated by Microsoft. All traces of the former airfield, such as runways and hangars, have been removed.
Wieringermeer Glidersite was a dedicated airfield for gliding (sailplanes). It was the home base for the Zweefvliegclub Wieringermeer (ZVCW) and served as a significant hub for recreational and instructional gliding in the North Holland region for many years. Operations primarily consisted of winch-launched and aero-towed glider flights from its grass runway. It was an important asset for the local aviation community.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the Wieringermeer Glidersite. The land has been permanently and irreversibly converted to industrial and agricultural use with significant infrastructure built upon it. The original gliding club (ZVCW) has since relocated its operations to Slootdorp Airfield (ICAO: EHSD), located a few kilometers to the east.
