End of 2013. The resident gliding club, Zweefvliegclub Flevo, held its final flying season at the location in 2013 before ceasing operations there.
The closure was a result of a land-use decision by the landowner, the Dutch Central Government Real Estate Agency (Rijksvastgoedbedrijf). The agency decided not to renew the lease for the airfield, opting to repurpose the government-owned land for other economic activities, which ultimately included large-scale renewable energy generation.
The site of the former airfield has been completely redeveloped and is now occupied by a large-scale solar farm, part of the Zonneplan Biddinghuizen project (including Zonnepark Dorhout Mees). The grass runways and all associated airfield infrastructure have been removed and replaced with thousands of solar panels.
Established in 1968 on land reclaimed from the sea (the Flevopolder), Glider Field Biddinghuizen served as the home base for the Zweefvliegclub Flevo for 45 years. It was a key recreational aviation hub in the central Netherlands, dedicated almost exclusively to gliding (sailplane) operations. The field facilitated winch launching and aero-towing for training, competitions, and leisure flights, playing a vital role in the region's gliding community.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The permanent redevelopment of the site into a major solar energy park makes a return to aviation activities at this location impossible. The former resident club, Zweefvliegclub Flevo, has since merged with another club and relocated its operations to Kraggenburg Airfield (EHBO).
