Located on the main islet of Buariki, the airport is a critical piece of infrastructure, providing an essential connection for residents, cargo, and occasional visitors to the nation's capital, South Tarawa. Instead, a small, open-air shelter, often in the style of a local maneaba, provides protection from the sun and rain for waiting passengers. There are no check-in counters, lounges, shops, or restaurants. Check-in procedures are handled manually by the airline's local representative upon the aircraft's arrival or shortly before, and baggage is loaded and unloaded by hand. The runway itself is a cleared and compacted coral and grass strip.

For travelers, practical planning is essential. It is crucial to reconfirm flight schedules directly with Air Kiribati, as they can be subject to change due to weather or operational requirements. Onward transportation from the airport is not formalized; there are no taxis or rental services. Arrangements for transport, typically by motorbike or truck, must be made in advance, usually through a local host or guesthouse. Visitors should arrive with all necessary supplies, including water and snacks, as nothing is available for purchase at the airport. All connecting flights, whether to other Kiribati islands or international destinations, must be made through Tarawa.
