Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Circa late 2012. The airstrip fell into disuse following the incapacitating plane crash of its owner and primary user, Governor Danbaba Suntai, on October 25, 2012.

Reason for Closure

Abandonment due to the owner's incapacitation. The airstrip was a private field built for and used almost exclusively by the then-Governor of Taraba State, Danbaba Suntai. After he sustained severe, career-ending injuries in a plane crash (which occurred near Yola Airport, not at this airstrip) and was no longer able to fly, the airstrip ceased to have a purpose and was abandoned.

Current Status

The site is defunct and abandoned. Satellite imagery confirms the single runway is in a state of disrepair, unmaintained, and heavily overgrown with grass and other vegetation, rendering it completely unusable for any aviation activity. The land appears to be reverting to the surrounding farmland.

Historical Significance

The airstrip's significance is entirely tied to Governor Danbaba Suntai, a licensed pilot and well-known aviation enthusiast. It was constructed as his personal airfield on his private farm property in the town of Suntai. It served as a private base for his personal travel and recreational flying. Operations were limited to light general aviation aircraft, such as the Cessna models the governor was known to fly. It was never a public, commercial, or military facility and did not handle scheduled flights.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airstrip. Given that it was a private facility built for a specific individual who passed away in 2017, there is no practical or economic driver for its restoration. The official airport for the state, Jalingo Airport (ICAO: DNJA), was renamed the 'Danbaba Danfulani Suntai Airport' in his honor, serving as the public memorial to his aviation legacy and fulfilling the region's air transport needs.
