Kourou Arkenné Airfield

Kourou Arkenné Airfield (NE-0002) is a small aerodrome located in a remote part of Niger, with coordinates 22.78200° N, 14.02480° E. This facility is notable for straddling the border between Niger and Libya, near Toummo, and is situated within the Sahara Desert in a largely undeveloped area.

The airfield features a single asphalt runway, designated 18/36, which is approximately 2,914 meters (9,560 feet) long, though its exact dimensions and coordinates may be estimations and are not recommended for flight planning. Built in 1984 under the regime of Muammar Gaddafi to assert Libyan influence in the Sahel region, it was abandoned in the early 2000s. Historically, it has been intermittently used by armed and terrorist groups, and in 2016, French and Nigerien forces temporarily took control during Operation Barkhane for remote missions before its subsequent abandonment around 2020. Limited public information is available regarding its current status, but its extreme isolation suggests it may be entirely abandoned, though evidence of tracks could indicate some activity.
