Aitutaki Airport (IATA: AIT, ICAO: NCAI) is the primary air gateway to the island of Aitutaki, one of the most visited destinations in the Cook Islands. The airport plays a vital role in the local economy by facilitating the tourism that sustains the island, providing the essential link to Rarotonga, the nation's capital and main international hub. Its operations are crucial for both visitor access and the transport of essential supplies to the community.

The airport possesses a significant history, having been constructed as a strategic military airstrip by United States Marines and New Zealand public works personnel in 1942 during World War II. Built as an Allied airbase, its two large runways were designed to accommodate bomber aircraft. Today, only one of these runways remains operational, but the original wartime scale is still evident and serves as a historical landmark.

Located on the northern part of the main island, Aitutaki Airport is conveniently situated within a five-to-ten-minute drive of the main settlement, Arutanga, and most of the island's resorts and accommodations. Travelers typically reach their lodging via pre-arranged airport transfers, which are standard practice for nearly all hotels. Scooter and car rental services are also available, with many visitors arranging for vehicles to be ready for them upon arrival.

Operations at the airport are exclusively domestic. Air Rarotonga is the sole airline providing scheduled passenger service, operating multiple daily flights to and from Rarotonga International Airport (RAR). The flight, which takes approximately 50 minutes, is flown on Saab 340 and Embraer Bandeirante turboprop aircraft and is known for its scenic views of the atolls. All international visitors must fly into Rarotonga first and then connect to this domestic service.

The facility itself is a small, single-terminal building with an open-air design that reflects the island's relaxed atmosphere. Amenities are modest and functional, including check-in counters for Air Rarotonga, a sheltered waiting area, restrooms, and a small kiosk for light refreshments and souvenirs. For a smooth departure, travelers are advised to arrive approximately 60 minutes before their flight. Upon arrival, passengers are often greeted with a traditional flower 'ei, and because of the airport’s small size, clearing the terminal and meeting transfer transport is a swift and simple process.
