The exact date is unknown, as the closure was a gradual process of abandonment rather than a single event. The airport (also known by the official ICAO code FYRH) was listed as an 'Unlicensed Government Aerodrome' in a 2012 Namibian Directorate of Civil Aviation (DCA) document but was absent from the list of licensed aerodromes by 2018. This indicates it officially ceased to be recognized for aviation use sometime between 2012 and 2018.
The primary reason for closure was economic non-viability and lack of demand. As a small, unpaved, and unlicensed airstrip, it likely served a very limited number of flights. Its proximity to Windhoek (approximately 90 km away), which hosts both Hosea Kutako International Airport (FYWH) and the busy general aviation hub Eros Airport (FYWE), made it largely redundant. Without sufficient traffic to justify the costs of maintenance and potential upgrades to meet licensing standards, the airstrip fell into disuse and was eventually de-listed by aviation authorities.
The site is completely abandoned and non-operational. Satellite imagery shows the former dirt runway is still clearly visible but is in a state of disrepair. It is overgrown with grass and shrubs and is crossed by numerous vehicle tracks, rendering it unusable for any type of aircraft. There is no remaining aviation infrastructure on the site, and the land appears to be unused and undeveloped.
Rehoboth Town Airport was a basic government airstrip intended to provide air access to the town of Rehoboth. Its operations were limited to general aviation, which would have included private light aircraft, medical evacuation flights, government administrative travel, and possibly some charter or tourism operations. It was never a commercial airport with scheduled passenger services. The facility consisted of a single dirt/gravel runway and lacked significant infrastructure like a terminal building, control tower, or hangars. It operated under Visual Flight Rules (VFR) and served as a rudimentary link for a regional center before road transport became entirely sufficient for the town's needs.
There are no known or publicly discussed plans to rehabilitate or reopen the Rehoboth Town Airport. The high cost of rebuilding the runway and associated infrastructure to modern standards, combined with the lack of a clear economic or logistical need due to the excellent road connection and proximity to Windhoek's superior aviation facilities, makes any prospect of reopening extremely unlikely.
