Former Marromeu Airport

The primary reason for the closure was its replacement by a superior facility. The old airfield (MZ-0056) was a basic, likely unpaved airstrip. The new airport (FQMA) was built with a paved runway and better infrastructure to support the revitalization of the local sugar industry after the civil war. The land of the former airport was subsequently reclaimed for its high-value agricultural use, specifically for sugarcane cultivation, which is the region's main economic driver.

The site of the former airport has been completely decommissioned and repurposed. Satellite imagery of the coordinates (-18.29363, 35.93434) clearly shows that the land has been absorbed into the surrounding agricultural fields. The faint outline of the former north-south runway is still visible cutting through the sugarcane plantations, but it is no longer a functional surface. There are no remaining airport buildings, hangars, or any other infrastructure on the site.

The Former Marromeu Airport was historically significant as the primary air link for the Sena Sugar Estates, one of the largest sugar plantations and industrial complexes in Mozambique. During its operational years, it handled general aviation traffic, primarily light aircraft and charter flights. Its main functions included: transporting company personnel, engineers, and management; flying in critical spare parts and supplies for the sugar mill; and serving as a vital connection for medical evacuations from the remote town to larger cities like Beira. The airstrip was essential for the logistical support of the vast agricultural and industrial operation before the construction of the new airport.

There are no plans or prospects for reopening the former Marromeu Airport (MZ-0056). The site has been physically reclaimed for agriculture, and more importantly, it has been functionally and permanently replaced by the active Marromeu Airport (FQMA). Any future investment in aviation infrastructure for the region would be directed towards maintaining or upgrading the existing, operational airport.
