The airport is confirmed closed, but an exact date is not officially documented. Based on historical satellite imagery and local reports, it fell into disuse and was effectively abandoned by the late 1990s or early 2000s. The final, irreversible closure occurred with the construction on its grounds starting in the mid-2000s.
The closure was primarily due to a combination of economic factors and land repurposing. The airstrip was not economically viable to maintain due to insufficient air traffic. As ground transportation infrastructure (roads) to the region improved over time, the critical need for the airstrip diminished. The final reason for its permanent closure was the decision by the state government of Oaxaca to repurpose the land for a major educational institution, the Universidad de la Cañada.
The site is permanently closed and has been repurposed. The southern half of the former runway and airport grounds is now the campus of the Universidad de la Cañada (UNCA), a public university established to serve the region. The university buildings, sports fields, and access roads are built directly on top of the former aviation infrastructure. The remaining northern portion of the runway is visibly deteriorated, overgrown, and completely unusable for any form of aviation.
Teotitlán de Flores Magón Airport was never a major commercial airport with scheduled flights (hence the N/A IATA code). It functioned as a regional 'aeropista' (airstrip). Its primary historical significance was providing vital air connectivity for the remote and mountainous Cañada region of Oaxaca. During its active years, it handled general aviation, including private aircraft, air taxi services, and critically, government and medical evacuation (MEDEVAC) flights. For a period, it was the fastest way to access the region or transport individuals in need of urgent medical care to larger cities.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The prospect is effectively zero, as the land has been permanently redeveloped with the construction of the Universidad de la Cañada campus. Re-establishing an airport at this location would require the demolition of the university, making it logistically, financially, and politically infeasible.
