Approximately 2007. The closure coincided with the inauguration and full operational transfer to the new Ciudad Constitución Airport (MMDA).
Relocation and replacement. The airport was closed because a new, larger, and more modern facility, Ciudad Constitución Airport (ICAO: MMDA, IATA: CUA), was constructed at a different location (approx. 7 km to the southwest) to better serve the region's growing needs and meet modern aviation standards. The old airport was located very close to the expanding city center, posing safety and noise concerns and limiting its potential for expansion.
The site has been completely redeveloped and integrated into the urban fabric of Ciudad Constitución. The former airport grounds have been repurposed for public and commercial use. The main runway's path is now a major city thoroughfare, Boulevard Agustín Olachea Avilés. The land also hosts the 'Expo Comondú' fairgrounds, government offices, sports facilities, and commercial businesses. While the faint outline of the runway is still visible in satellite imagery, it is no longer an aviation facility in any capacity.
The original Villa Constitución Airport was a vital air link for the Santo Domingo Valley, a major agricultural hub in Baja California Sur. For decades, it was the primary connection for business, transport, and emergency services to and from this relatively isolated region. Its operations were crucial for the local economy and consisted mainly of:
- **General Aviation:** Private and business aircraft.
- **Agricultural Aviation:** Extensive use by crop-dusting aircraft serving the surrounding farmlands.
- **Air Taxi and Charter Services:** Connecting Ciudad Constitución with La Paz, Loreto, and other regional destinations.
- **Medical Evacuation Flights:** Providing critical emergency transport.
None. The land has been permanently and extensively repurposed for urban development. The existence of the modern and fully operational Ciudad Constitución Airport (MMDA) nearby makes any consideration of reopening the old site both unnecessary and physically impossible without massive demolition of current infrastructure.
