Circa 2009-2010
The airport was permanently closed following the acquisition of the land by the Mexican Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA). The site was selected for the construction of a new, large-scale military base as part of a federal strategy to increase military presence and combat organized crime in the Comarca Lagunera region, which was experiencing high levels of violence at the time. The closure was a direct result of this military conversion.
The site of the former airport is now fully occupied by the Campo Militar 72/o. Batallón de Infantería 'La Joya', an active and significant military installation of the Mexican Army. Construction of the base began around 2010 and it was officially inaugurated in February 2012. All aviation infrastructure, including the runway, taxiways, and hangars, has been completely demolished and replaced with barracks, administrative buildings, vehicle depots, training grounds, and a parade square. The location is a secure, active military zone and is not accessible to the public.
San Nicolás Airport was a private/public-use airfield that served the general aviation needs of Lerdo and the surrounding agricultural region. Its primary operations included:
- **General Aviation:** It catered to private aircraft owners, local business leaders, and politicians.
- **Agricultural Aviation:** Given the area's strong agricultural economy (cotton, melons, etc.), the airport was a vital base for crop-dusting and fumigation aircraft.
- **Air Taxi and Charter Services:** It handled small charter flights and air taxi services for the region.
The airport featured a single asphalt runway (approximately 1,500 meters or 4,900 feet long) and basic facilities like hangars. It served as a smaller, more accessible alternative to the larger Francisco Sarabia International Airport (TRC) in Torreón for non-commercial flights.
There are zero plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The land has been permanently and strategically repurposed for national defense. The military base is a critical asset for security operations in the region. All civil aviation needs for Lerdo and the Comarca Lagunera are comprehensively served by the nearby Francisco Sarabia International Airport (IATA: TRC, ICAO: MMTC) in Torreón.
