El Maguey Airport

Economic reasons and lack of demand. As a small, unpaved airstrip with minimal infrastructure, its closure was almost certainly due to it no longer being economically viable or necessary for its primary users, such as local agricultural operations or private owners. There is no evidence of military conversion or a specific incident leading to its closure.

The airport is abandoned and in a state of disrepair. Satellite imagery shows the dirt runway is still clearly visible but is unmaintained, overgrown in sections, and crossed by vehicle tracks. The site is not used for any aviation purposes and the land has reverted to undeveloped scrubland, blending in with the surrounding environment.

The airport was a small, local airstrip with no significant national or regional historical importance. Its 1000-meter (3281 ft) dirt runway served the rural community of Valle de Zaragoza. When active, it primarily handled general aviation (small private planes like Cessnas or Pipers) and agricultural aircraft (crop dusters) supporting the surrounding farmland. Its main function was to provide air access for private ranchers, local businesses, and agricultural activities in the valley.

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening El Maguey Airport. Given its remote location, the lack of demand that led to its initial closure, and the availability of other operational airports in the region such as Hidalgo del Parral Airport (MMHL), a reopening is considered highly improbable.
