The airport was closed gradually and is believed to have ceased regular operations around 2017-2019. There is no exact official closure date, as it was a private airstrip whose use was phased out over time.
The closure was due to economic and logistical reasons. The airport's primary user, the La Encantada Silver Mine (operated by First Majestic Silver Corp.), transitioned to using improved ground transportation. As local road infrastructure improved, it became more cost-effective, secure, and practical to transport personnel, supplies, and even the mine's silver doré product by road to the nearest major city, Torreón, rather than maintaining the airstrip and chartering aircraft.
The site is currently an abandoned and unmaintained airstrip. The dirt/gravel runway is still clearly visible on satellite imagery but is no longer in use for any aviation purposes. The land remains part of the property associated with the La Encantada mining operations, but the airstrip itself is inactive and slowly being reclaimed by the desert environment.
Estacion San Fernando Airport was a private airstrip built and operated almost exclusively to serve the La Encantada Silver Mine, one of Mexico's largest silver mines, located in the remote Sierra Mojada region. Its primary purpose was to provide rapid transportation for mine personnel, executives, urgent supplies, and high-value cargo to and from the isolated location. For many years, it was a critical piece of infrastructure that connected the mine with larger cities, overcoming the challenges of difficult and time-consuming ground travel. Operations typically involved private charter aircraft, such as Cessna Caravans or Pilatus PC-12s, capable of handling the unpaved runway.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport. The mine's operator has established a stable and secure logistics chain based on ground transportation. Reinstating air service would require significant investment for runway refurbishment and a fundamental change in the mine's operational strategy, making a reopening highly unlikely in the foreseeable future.
