Circa 1946. Commercial operations ceased with the inauguration and consolidation of the new, larger Francisco Sarabia International Airport (now Torreón International Airport, ICAO: MMTC) in the neighboring city of Torreón.
The airport was rendered obsolete and closed following the construction of the Francisco Sarabia International Airport in Torreón. The new airport was larger, more modern, and strategically located to serve the entire Comarca Lagunera metropolitan area (Torreón, Gómez Palacio, and Lerdo), effectively replacing the older Gómez Palacio facility.
The site of the former Bucareli Airport has been completely redeveloped. It is now the location of the Parque Industrial Lagunero (Lagunero Industrial Park), a major industrial and manufacturing zone in Gómez Palacio. There are no visible remnants of the original airport infrastructure, such as runways, taxiways, or hangars.
Bucareli Airport was the first and original airport for the entire Comarca Lagunera region. Its primary significance lies in establishing the first air link to this vital agricultural and industrial hub. It handled the region's inaugural commercial flights, operated by airlines such as Líneas Aéreas Mexicanas S.A. (LAMSA) starting in 1939. The airport was crucial for passenger, mail, and cargo transport, supporting the area's economic development during the early days of Mexican aviation.
None. The site is fully occupied by a dense and active industrial park, making a reopening physically impossible. The region is well-served by the nearby Torreón International Airport (MMTC), eliminating any need for a new airport at this historical location. There are no plans or prospects for its reopening.
