The airport ceased operations gradually between approximately 2010 and 2015. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows a distinct, usable runway in 2009, but by 2015, the strip had been almost entirely plowed over and integrated into the surrounding farmland.
Economic reasons. The airport was a small, unpaved airstrip, and its operational value likely diminished over time. The land was subsequently converted back to its primary economic use in the region: agriculture. There is no evidence to suggest the closure was due to a specific accident, military conversion, or regulatory action. It was a simple cessation of use followed by land reclamation.
The site of the former airport has been completely converted into active agricultural fields. As seen on current satellite imagery at coordinates 28.46758, -106.73108, there are no remaining traces of the runway, taxiways, or any airport infrastructure. The land is now used for farming and is indistinguishable from the surrounding agricultural plots.
Colonia Anáhuac Airport was a local, private-use airfield that primarily supported the significant agricultural industry of the Cuauhtémoc municipality, an area known for its large Mennonite community and extensive apple orchards. Its operations would have consisted mainly of general aviation for private transport and agricultural aviation, such as crop dusting and spraying. The airport's ICAO code (MX-2391) is an unofficial identifier, indicating it was not a major, publicly regulated facility. Its significance was purely functional and local, providing a vital service to the area's agribusinesses before its closure.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the Colonia Anáhuac Airport. Given that the land has been fully and successfully repurposed for valuable agricultural production, it is extremely unlikely that it will be converted back to aviation use. The region's aviation needs are served by other private airstrips and larger regional airports.
