Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately mid-2017. Historical satellite imagery shows the runway was intact in early 2017 but was being demolished for new construction by late 2017. A press release from the site's owner, Argonaut Gold, confirms that construction on the new facility began in the third quarter of 2017.

Reason for Closure

Economic and operational repurposing of land. The airport was privately owned by the mining company Minera La Colorada (a subsidiary of Argonaut Gold). It was permanently closed and demolished to build a large-scale solar power plant on the site. This plant was designed to provide lower-cost and more sustainable electricity for the adjacent La Colorada Mine's operations.

Current Status

The site of the former airport is now fully occupied by the La Colorada Solar Plant. The runway, taxiways, and any associated aviation buildings have been completely removed. The land is now covered by thousands of photovoltaic solar panels and related electrical infrastructure. This solar plant was commissioned in early 2018 and provides power directly to the mine.

Historical Significance

El Aigame Airport was a private airstrip that served as a crucial logistical asset for the remote La Colorada gold and silver mine. Its operations were vital for the mine's efficiency and security. The airport handled general aviation and small charter aircraft used for:
- Transporting personnel, including executives, engineers, and specialized contractors.
- Moving high-value, time-sensitive cargo, most notably the secure transport of gold and silver doré bars produced at the mine.
- Facilitating emergency medical evacuations for mine workers.

Reopening Prospects

None. The prospect of reopening is zero. The land has been permanently and irreversibly repurposed for industrial energy generation. The original airport infrastructure is gone, making a return to aviation use at this specific location impossible. The mine now relies on ground transportation and the nearby Hermosillo International Airport (MMHO) for its logistical needs.
