The airport ceased aviation operations gradually, likely between the late 1990s and the mid-2000s. The site was progressively repurposed for ground use, with significant construction over the runways beginning around 2016, making any future aviation use impossible.
Military conversion and expansion. The airfield was located directly adjacent to the Mexican Navy's Shipyard Number 6 (Astillero de Marina No. 6 - ASTIMAR-6). The expanding naval base and shipyard absorbed the airfield's land for ground support operations, vehicle and equipment storage, and the construction of new large-scale industrial and administrative buildings.
The site is now fully integrated into the active and expanding Mexican Navy base and shipyard complex (ASTIMAR-6). The faint outlines of the two former runways are still visible from satellite imagery, but they are heavily deteriorated and bisected by new roads and buildings. The area is used for military vehicle parking, open-air storage of large components, and as a general-purpose yard for the shipyard. The site is a high-security military zone and is not accessible to the public.
The airport was the former Guaymas Naval Air Station (Base Aeronaval de Guaymas). As a key installation for the Mexican Navy (Armada de México), its primary role was to support maritime operations in the strategically important Gulf of California. Operations would have included maritime surveillance, coastal patrol, anti-smuggling efforts, and search and rescue missions. The base likely hosted a variety of naval aircraft, including fixed-wing patrol planes and helicopters. The name 'Oritz Airport' appears to be an unofficial or historical designation found in non-governmental aviation databases, as the official military name would have been related to its function as a naval air station.
Zero. The prospect of reopening the site as an airport is non-existent. The land has been permanently and irreversibly redeveloped for a critical military and industrial purpose. The runways are obstructed, partially demolished, and built over. All regional civil and military aviation needs are served by the nearby General JosĂ© MarĂa Yáñez International Airport (ICAO: MMGM).
