Approximately 1972. The exact date is not well-documented, but its closure coincided with the inauguration of the new, current Guaymas International Airport (IATA: GYM, ICAO: MMGM) in 1972, which was built to replace it.
Replacement and obsolescence. The original airport was small, with limited capacity and unable to accommodate the larger jet aircraft that were becoming standard for commercial aviation in the 1970s. Its proximity to the growing city also restricted potential expansion. A new, larger, and more modern facility was constructed at a different location to better serve the region's growing tourism and industrial needs, leading to the planned closure and transfer of all operations from the Lázaro Cárdenas field.
The site has been completely redeveloped and is now the location of a major industrial park. The primary occupant is the 'Maquilas Tetakawi' assembly and manufacturing plant, specifically within the 'Parque Industrial Roca Fuerte'. The layout of the industrial park clearly follows the footprint of the former airport; the main road through the complex, 'Calzada Aeropuerto' (Airport Avenue), runs directly over the path of the old main runway. The plots and buildings are arranged along former taxiways and aprons. No original airport infrastructure, such as a terminal, hangars, or control tower, remains.
General Lázaro Cárdenas Airport, also known as 'Campo de Aviación Lázaro Cárdenas', was the original primary airport for the city of Guaymas, Sonora. For decades, it was the main air gateway to the region, serving commercial passenger flights, general aviation, and air cargo. It played a crucial role in the development of tourism, particularly for the nearby destination of San Carlos, and supported the city's important fishing and shipping industries. Airlines such as Aeronaves de México (the predecessor to Aeroméxico) operated flights from this airport, likely using propeller aircraft like the Douglas DC-3 and DC-6, connecting Guaymas to other major Mexican cities. It served as the city's aviation hub until it was superseded by the current international airport.
There are zero prospects for reopening this site as an airport. The land has been fully and successfully repurposed into a vital economic zone for the city, hosting significant industrial operations. Any future investment in aviation infrastructure for the Guaymas region will be directed towards the existing and fully operational Guaymas International Airport (MMGM).
