The airport closed in the early 2010s, estimated between 2010 and 2013. Analysis of historical satellite imagery shows a well-maintained and active runway in 2010, which becomes visibly degraded, unmaintained, and encroached upon by vegetation and farm tracks in imagery from 2013 onwards.
While no official reason is publicly documented, the closure was almost certainly due to economic factors and the cessation of private operations. As a private airstrip, its upkeep was dependent on the owner. It was likely abandoned when it was no longer needed, the property changed hands, or the cost of maintenance became prohibitive. The conversion of the surrounding land for agricultural use suggests the land was repurposed.
The airport is permanently closed and abandoned. The physical runway is still visible in satellite views but is in a complete state of disrepair. It is unpaved, heavily weathered, and partially reclaimed by surrounding agricultural land. The site is not usable by any aircraft and the land is now primarily used for farming.
El Ranchito Airport was a private general aviation airstrip with local significance. Located in the heart of the Valle del Yaqui, one of Mexico's most important agricultural regions, its primary purpose was to support farming operations. When active, it would have handled small aircraft for agricultural aviation (crop dusting/fumigation) and private transportation for the ranch's owners and personnel. It was never a commercial or public-use airport and had no military role.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening El Ranchito Airport. Given its advanced state of decay, the lack of any remaining infrastructure, and the fact that the land has been repurposed for agriculture, a reopening is considered extremely unlikely.
