Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 26, 2025
Closure Date

Circa 2008-2009. The airport was rendered obsolete and effectively closed upon the construction and opening of the new, paved Divisaderos Airport (ICAO: MM33), located a few kilometers to the southeast. The closure was a gradual abandonment rather than a single dated event.

Reason for Closure

Replacement. The primary reason for the closure of this old, unpaved airstrip was its replacement by the modern Divisaderos Airport (MM33). The new airport features a paved runway and better facilities, likely constructed to support expanded mining operations in the region (such as Agnico Eagle's La India Mine). The old field was no longer adequate for the area's aviation needs.

Current Status

The site is an abandoned airstrip. Satellite imagery clearly shows the faint outline of the former dirt runway. The area is unmaintained, overgrown with desert scrub and vegetation, and is crossed by informal vehicle tracks. The land is not used for any official aviation, agricultural, or commercial purpose and is effectively derelict.

Historical Significance

The Old Divisaderos Airport was a small, rudimentary dirt airstrip that provided vital air access for the remote mining and ranching community of Divisaderos, Sonora. Its operations were limited to general aviation, primarily handling small, single-engine, propeller-driven aircraft capable of landing on short, unprepared surfaces. It served as a critical link for transporting personnel, light cargo, and medical supplies, supporting the local economy before improved infrastructure, including the new airport, was developed.

Reopening Prospects

There are zero known plans or prospects for reopening the Old Divisaderos Airport. Its function has been entirely and permanently superseded by the superior Divisaderos Airport (MM33). There is no economic, logistical, or operational incentive to reactivate an inferior, unpaved airstrip when a modern facility exists nearby to serve the region's needs.
