The exact closure date is not publicly documented. However, analysis of historical satellite imagery indicates the airstrip fell into a state of disuse and became unmaintained sometime between the early and mid-2010s. Imagery from 2006 shows a well-defined and maintained runway, while imagery from 2017 onwards shows significant degradation and vegetation growth.
As a private airstrip, the official reason for closure is not public. The most probable cause is a private decision by the owner of the Hacienda La Mora. This could be due to a variety of factors including: economic reasons (the high cost of maintenance), a change in property ownership, or the owner no longer having a need for private air access. The closure was not related to military conversion, a major publicized accident, or government action.
The site is currently an abandoned, non-operational airstrip. Satellite imagery clearly shows the remnant of a dirt runway, but it is unmaintained, eroded, and overgrown with desert vegetation. It is unsuitable for any aircraft operations in its present condition. The land remains part of the private hacienda property and the former runway may be used as a simple access road for ground vehicles on the ranch.
The airport's significance was entirely private and logistical. It served as the dedicated airstrip for the large and remote 'Hacienda La Mora' ranch. Its purpose was to provide direct, convenient air access for the property's owners, guests, and potentially for ranching or agricultural operations (e.g., transporting personnel, high-value supplies, or for aerial surveys). It would have handled light general aviation aircraft, such as single-engine Cessnas or Pipers, allowing visitors to bypass long and potentially difficult travel by unpaved roads in the remote Ocampo municipality.
There are no known or published plans to reopen Hacienda La Mora Airport. Any prospect of reopening would be solely at the discretion and expense of the private owner of the hacienda. Given its remote location, the significant cost required to restore the runway to a safe condition, and the lack of any apparent economic driver, the prospect of it reopening for aviation purposes is considered extremely low.
