Cerros Prietos was a minor, private general aviation airfield with a single dirt runway. Its primary role was almost certainly to support the extensive agricultural industry in the Nuevo Casas Grandes region, serving as a base for crop-dusting and aerial application aircraft. It may also have been used by local ranchers for private transportation. The airport did not handle any scheduled commercial passenger flights or military operations, and its significance was confined to local agricultural and private aviation support.

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Cerros Prietos Airport. The land is now privately owned and used for productive agriculture. Furthermore, the aviation needs of the Nuevo Casas Grandes area are served by the much larger and better-equipped Nuevo Casas Grandes Municipal Airport (IATA: NCG, ICAO: MMCS). Reopening this small, defunct airstrip is considered economically unfeasible and highly improbable.
