La Consolidada Airport

While no official reason has been published, the closure is overwhelmingly likely due to economic factors. La Consolidada was a private airfield, and such facilities are expensive to maintain. Its existence was tied to the specific business needs of a private entity, most likely a large agricultural corporation or ranch in the Ascensión municipality. The closure probably resulted from the owning company ceasing operations, being sold, or no longer finding a private airstrip to be a cost-effective asset. There is no evidence to suggest the closure was due to a major accident, environmental issues, or military conversion.

The airport is abandoned and in a state of disrepair. Satellite imagery clearly shows the paved runway is still intact but has significant cracking, weathering, and vegetation growing through its surface. It is completely unusable for aviation purposes in its current condition. Any associated buildings, such as hangars or sheds, also appear to be derelict. The site is not being used for any other purpose and is slowly being reclaimed by the surrounding Chihuahuan Desert environment.

La Consolidada Airport's significance was entirely local and private. It was not a public or commercial airport. Its primary function was to support the large-scale agricultural operations in the remote Ascensión region of Chihuahua. Operations when active would have included:

1. **General Aviation & Corporate Transport:** Flying owners, managers, investors, and technical staff directly to the agricultural fields, bypassing the need for long drives from larger cities.
2. **Agricultural Aviation:** Potentially serving as a base or refueling/reloading point for crop-dusting and spraying aircraft that serviced the vast farmlands in the area.
3. **Logistics and Cargo:** Facilitating the rapid transport of light cargo, critical spare parts for farm machinery, and other essential supplies.

The airport featured a single paved runway, approximately 1,500 meters (4,900 feet) in length, capable of handling light to medium-sized private and turboprop aircraft.

There are no known or published plans to reopen La Consolidada Airport. A reopening would be a private endeavor requiring substantial capital investment to completely resurface the runway, rebuild infrastructure, and secure certification from Mexico's Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC). Given that the original economic driver for the airport's existence is gone, and there is no apparent new demand in this remote area, the prospect of it ever reopening for aviation purposes is extremely low.
