The exact date of closure is not officially documented, as it was a private aerodrome. Analysis of historical satellite imagery indicates that the airstrip was clearly defined and maintained into the early 2000s but shows significant deterioration and overgrowth by the early 2010s. It likely ceased regular operations and fell into disuse sometime between 2008 and 2012.
Economic reasons and obsolescence. The aerodrome was a private facility, not a public airport. Such airstrips are typically built and maintained by a specific company or industry to support their operations. The closure was not due to a single event like an accident but rather a gradual abandonment after the primary user no longer required it. This is common when a local mine, large ranch, or agricultural business scales down operations, changes ownership, or finds that ground transportation or using larger regional airports is more cost-effective.
The site is completely abandoned and non-operational for any form of aviation. Current satellite imagery shows the former dirt/gravel runway is severely degraded, overgrown with shrubs and grass, and cut across by numerous vehicle tracks. It is functionally just a piece of undeveloped land, possibly used as an informal local road. There are no visible signs of any remaining aviation infrastructure like hangars, lighting, or terminal buildings.
The aerodrome's significance was logistical and private, not public. It never handled scheduled commercial flights (hence no IATA code). Its primary purpose was to serve general aviation aircraft, such as single and twin-engine propeller planes. Operations were almost certainly tied to the region's mining or agricultural industries, providing a way for company executives, engineers, and high-priority, low-volume cargo to access the remote location directly, bypassing the multi-hour drive from the nearest major airports in Zacatecas (MMZC) or Durango (MMDO). It was a tool for private enterprise, facilitating business in a relatively isolated area.
There are no known or published plans to reopen the Aeródromo San Francisco de Órganos. Re-establishing the airstrip would require a complete reconstruction of the runway surface and significant private investment. Without a renewed, compelling economic need from a local industry (such as the opening of a major new mine), it is highly improbable that the aerodrome will ever be reactivated. For all practical purposes, it is considered permanently closed.
