The exact date is not officially documented, but analysis of historical satellite imagery suggests the airport ceased operations and was closed sometime between 2005 and 2008. Imagery from 2002 shows the airfield in a clear, usable state, while by 2012, significant industrial development had begun on the property, indicating it had been closed for several years.
The closure was due to economic reasons and urban expansion. The land, located on the southwestern outskirts of the rapidly growing industrial city of Reynosa, became highly valuable for commercial and industrial development. The presence of the much larger and better-equipped General Lucio Blanco International Airport (MMRX) just 15 km (9 miles) to the east made this small, private airfield redundant for the region's aviation needs.
The site of the former airport has been completely redeveloped into an industrial park. The faint, ghostly outlines of its two intersecting runways are still visible in satellite views, but the land is now occupied by numerous large warehouses, manufacturing plants (maquiladoras), and open-air industrial storage yards. All original airport infrastructure, such as hangars or service buildings, has been demolished and replaced. The airport is permanently defunct.
Santa Clara del Castillo was a private general aviation airfield. It primarily handled operations for light single- and twin-engine aircraft. Its main functions would have included serving private pilots, supporting local business travel, and potentially agricultural aviation (crop dusting) for the surrounding farmland. It was not a commercial airport and did not handle scheduled passenger traffic. Its name suggests it was likely owned by a private individual, family, or company ('del Castillo'). Its significance was purely local, providing a convenient landing strip for private aviation before the city's industrial boom led to its redevelopment.
There are zero prospects for reopening. The land has been irreversibly repurposed for high-value industrial use. The cost to acquire the land, demolish the existing structures, and rebuild an airport would be prohibitive and unnecessary, as the aviation requirements for the city of Reynosa are fully met by the General Lucio Blanco International Airport (MMRX).
