The airport was never officially opened. Construction was halted and the project was abandoned circa 2010-2011 after the runway was completed.
The project was abandoned during construction primarily due to a lack of continued federal and state funding. A change in state government administration led to a shift in priorities, and the new government did not allocate the necessary resources to complete the terminal, control tower, and other essential facilities. The airport has no operational history. Its significance lies in being a large-scale public infrastructure project that was never completed, often cited as a 'white elephant' ('elefante blanco') in local media. It was initiated around 2009 with the goal of boosting the economic development of the southern region of Nuevo León. The intended operations were to support the local agricultural industry (especially citrus exports), promote tourism, and serve general and regional aviation. The non-standard ICAO code 'MX-1956' is an unofficial identifier, as the airport was never certified and assigned an official 'MM' code for Mexico.
There are no concrete, funded plans from the state or federal government to complete and open the airport. Over the years, regional business leaders and local politicians have occasionally called for the project to be revived to capitalize on the initial investment. However, the significant cost required to build the remaining infrastructure, coupled with persistent questions about sufficient demand, makes its completion and opening in the near future highly unlikely.
