Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Circa 2018-2019. The airport was officially decommissioned to facilitate the construction of a new military base, with major construction taking place throughout 2018 and the base being formally inaugurated in late 2019.

Reason for Closure

Military Conversion. The site was selected by the Mexican Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA) to be converted into a permanent military base for the Mexican Army and the newly formed National Guard. This conversion was part of a broader federal strategy to increase security, combat organized crime, and control illegal trafficking in the strategic border region of Coahuila.

Current Status

The site is now an active and fully operational military installation. It houses the barracks, training facilities, and operational headquarters for a regiment of the Mexican National Guard (Guardia Nacional) and elements of the Mexican Army. The original runway is maintained and used for military aircraft and helicopter operations related to surveillance, troop transport, and security missions along the U.S.-Mexico border.

Historical Significance

Prior to its closure, El Veinte (also known as La Lupe) was a small public/private aerodrome. It primarily served general aviation, including private aircraft, air taxi services, and agricultural aviation (crop dusting). It was not a commercial airport with scheduled passenger flights but provided essential air access for the local community, ranchers, and businesses in the Ciudad Acuña area. Its name 'El Veinte' (The Twenty) likely refers to its location near Kilometer 20 on the highway leading to the La Amistad Dam.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airport to civilian or public use. Given its complete conversion into a strategic and permanent military base dedicated to national security, it is extremely unlikely that it will ever revert to its former status as a civilian aerodrome.
