The airport does not have an official, documented closure date as it was a private airstrip that fell into disuse. Analysis of historical satellite imagery suggests it became inactive and unmaintained sometime in the late 1990s or early 2000s. By the mid-2000s, the runway was clearly showing signs of significant deterioration and vegetation overgrowth.
The closure was not due to a specific event like a military conversion or a major accident, but rather from abandonment. As a private ranch airstrip ('aeródromo particular'), its operation was entirely dependent on the needs and financial ability of the ranch owner. It most likely ceased operations due to a change in property ownership, the owner no longer having an aircraft, or economic factors that made maintaining a private airstrip unfeasible.
The site is completely abandoned and derelict. Current satellite imagery shows the faint outline of a single dirt or gravel runway, which is now heavily overgrown with desert scrub and brush. There are no visible buildings, hangars, or any other airport infrastructure remaining. The land has effectively reverted to undeveloped rural rangeland and is indistinguishable from the surrounding area except for the faint scar of the former runway.
Rancho Nuevo Airport held no major historical significance in the context of public, commercial, or military aviation. It was a private airstrip built to serve the needs of the 'Rancho Nuevo' ranch. Its operations would have been limited to small, private general aviation aircraft (such as single-engine Cessnas, Pipers, etc.) used for personal transportation for the ranch owner and guests, business related to the ranch's operations, and potentially agricultural aviation (crop dusting). It never handled scheduled commercial passenger or cargo flights.
There are zero known plans or prospects for reopening Rancho Nuevo Airport. Given its remote location, complete state of disrepair, and its original private status, any effort to reactivate it would require a complete reconstruction of the runway and facilities. The aviation needs of Ciudad Acuña are adequately met by the Ciudad Acuña International Airport (ICAO: MMAC, IATA: ACN), making the redevelopment of this small, abandoned strip both economically unviable and unnecessary.
