The exact closure date is not officially documented. However, analysis of historical satellite imagery indicates a decline in maintenance and activity after 2015. The airstrip appears largely unused and unmaintained in imagery from 2020 onwards. Therefore, it is estimated to have closed sometime between 2015 and 2020.
There is no official public record detailing the reason for closure, which is common for a private airstrip. The closure is most likely linked to the private operational needs of the ranch it served. Probable reasons include a change in ranch ownership, the owner ceasing aviation activities, economic factors making maintenance and operation of an aircraft unviable, or the owner no longer requiring private air access to the remote location.
As of the latest satellite imagery, the airport is defunct. The physical dirt runway is still clearly visible but is in a state of disrepair. It appears weathered, ungraded, and has vegetation growing on its surface, making it unsuitable for safe aircraft operations. There are no aircraft, hangars, or support facilities visible. The land has reverted to being solely part of the private ranch property, with the airstrip remaining as a non-functional scar on the landscape.
Rancho Palomino Airport was a private airstrip with local, not national, significance. Its primary purpose was to serve the transportation and logistical needs of the large, remote 'Rancho Palomino' in the Chihuahua desert. Operations would have consisted exclusively of general aviation aircraft, such as single or twin-engine propeller planes (e.g., Cessna, Piper, Beechcraft). These aircraft would have been used to transport the ranch's owners, guests, and staff, as well as to bring in supplies. The nearly 5,000-foot unpaved runway was well-suited for supporting activities common to large Mexican ranches, including business, recreation, and possibly hunting tourism.
There are no known public plans or prospects for reopening Rancho Palomino Airport. As a private facility, any decision to restore and reopen the airstrip would be entirely at the discretion and expense of the current landowner. Given its remote location and the cost of runway refurbishment and aircraft operation, reopening is considered highly unlikely unless the owner develops a specific need for private air access.
