La Leona Airport

The official reason for closure is unknown as it was a private airfield with no public record. The closure was likely due to reasons common for small, private airstrips, such as: the owner no longer needing it, a change in land ownership, or economic non-viability for maintenance. Given its very basic nature (an unpaved dirt strip with no facilities), it was likely a private decision by the landowner.

The site is an abandoned airfield. Current satellite imagery shows the faint outline of a single dirt runway that is heavily overgrown with desert scrubland. The runway is no longer usable and is crisscrossed by informal vehicle tracks. There is no evidence of any remaining aviation infrastructure such as hangars, terminals, or lighting. The land has effectively reverted to its natural state and appears to be completely unused.

La Leona Airport was a small, private general aviation airstrip. The identifier 'MX-1909' is not an official ICAO code (which start with 'MM' for Mexico) but a country-specific identifier used in some non-official aviation databases. Its purpose was almost certainly to serve a large private property or ranch, possibly named 'La Leona'. Operations would have been limited to small, single-engine aircraft (e.g., Cessna, Piper) capable of using a short, unimproved runway for personal transportation or agricultural purposes. It held no known public, commercial, or strategic significance.

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening La Leona Airport. The primary aviation needs of the Ciudad Acuña region are served by the Ciudad Acuña International Airport (ICAO: MMCC). There is no apparent economic, commercial, or logistical incentive to restore and reactivate this remote and basic airstrip.
