Approximately 2007. The closure of Venustiano Carranza Airport coincided directly with the inauguration and commencement of operations at the new, modern Ciudad Acuña International Airport (ICAO: MMCC, IATA: ACN).
Replacement and Modernization. The old airport was closed because it was replaced by a new, larger, and more modern facility. The original airport was located closer to the city center, which limited its potential for expansion and posed challenges with urban encroachment. The new airport was built further from the city with a longer runway and modern terminal facilities capable of handling larger aircraft and increased passenger/cargo traffic, better serving the needs of the region's growing maquiladora industry.
The site has been completely redeveloped and is no longer recognizable as an airport from the ground. The land has been repurposed for urban development. The most prominent current occupant of the former airport grounds is the campus of the Universidad Tecnológica de Ciudad Acuña (UTCA). New roads, residential housing, and commercial buildings have been constructed over the former runway and apron areas. Satellite imagery clearly shows the university campus and surrounding developments covering the old airport's footprint.
For decades, Venustiano Carranza Airport was the primary air gateway to Ciudad Acuña. It primarily handled general aviation (private and corporate aircraft), air taxi services, and some limited regional commercial flights using smaller turboprop aircraft. Its location on the U.S.-Mexico border made it a crucial piece of infrastructure for cross-border business, logistics, and private travel, supporting the local economy before it was outgrown.
None. There are zero prospects for reopening this airport. The land has been permanently and irreversibly redeveloped for educational and urban use. The city's aviation needs are fully met by the operational Ciudad Acuña International Airport (MMCC), which makes the former site redundant.
