Llano de los Buras Airport

The airport was closed primarily due to being replaced by the Ciudad Acuña International Airport (MMCC). The new airport was built to modern standards with a longer runway, superior navigation aids, and better facilities capable of handling larger aircraft and potential commercial airline services. The Llano de los Buras field became obsolete and redundant for the city's aviation needs.

The site is completely abandoned and in a state of significant decay. Satellite imagery of the coordinates (29.49826, -102.49912) shows the clear but deteriorated outlines of the intersecting runways. The pavement is cracked, weathered, and being overgrown by desert scrub and vegetation. There are no remaining structures such as hangars, a terminal, or control tower. The land appears unused, with some informal dirt tracks crossing the old airfield.

Llano de los Buras Airport served as the original primary airfield for Ciudad Acuña. It was a vital link for the border city, handling general aviation, private flights, air taxi services, and likely some cross-border business travel. Its X-shaped runway configuration, which is still faintly visible, was a common design for older airfields, allowing for takeoffs and landings from multiple directions depending on wind conditions. It played a key role in the region's connectivity before the infrastructure was upgraded.

There are no known official plans or prospects for reopening Llano de los Buras Airport. The city is adequately served by the operational Ciudad Acuña International Airport (MMCC). Recommissioning the old airport would require a complete and costly reconstruction of all infrastructure, for which there is no apparent demand or economic justification. The site is more likely to be redeveloped for industrial or residential use if the city expands further south in the future.
