Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

The exact closure date is undocumented. However, analysis of historical satellite imagery indicates the airfield was still intact in 2014 but was rendered permanently unusable by 2016. Therefore, its closure occurred between 2014 and 2016.

Reason for Closure

The airfield was intentionally disabled to prevent its use for illicit activities. Satellite imagery clearly shows a series of large trenches dug across the runway at regular intervals. This is a common method used by the Mexican Armed Forces (specifically SEDENA - Secretariat of National Defense) to destroy clandestine or unauthorized airstrips ('pistas clandestinas') used by drug cartels for smuggling operations in northern Mexico.

Current Status

The site is completely abandoned and defunct. The runway remains physically destroyed by the trenches and is heavily overgrown with desert scrub and vegetation. It is completely unusable for any form of aviation and the land is reverting to its natural state. There are no remaining buildings or infrastructure of note.

Historical Significance

El Azulejo Airfield was a private, unpaved airstrip. Its primary function was to serve a large private ranch ('rancho') or agricultural enterprise in this remote region of Coahuila. Operations were limited to general aviation, supporting light single- or twin-engine aircraft for the private transport of personnel, supplies, and property owners. It had no public access, commercial flights, or wider regional significance.

Reopening Prospects

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening El Azulejo Airfield. Given that it was physically destroyed by military authorities for security reasons, its remote location, and the significant cost that would be required to repair it, any future aviation use is considered highly improbable.
